He began training in martial arts in 1967 under local black belt Richard Jackson in the art of Minna Jitsu, and has continued training with many notable Martial arts legends including the "Father of American Karate" Grandmaster Robert Trias (founder of the United States Karate Association), Hanshi George Anderson (head of the Kwan Mu Kan), and Professor Wally Jay (Bruce Lee's Judo and Jujitsu teacher). For over 40 years, Hanshi has taught national and regional seminars across the U.S. alongside his friends and fellow martial artists Bill "Super Foot" Wallace, Joe Lewis, Michael DePasquale Sr., Michael DePasquale Jr., Danny Lane, Wally Jay, Simon Rhee, Don Frye, and Dan Severn

Hanshi is a state licensed instructor with the Ohio Peace Officer Training Academy and is the Director of the Close Quarter Combat Skills Institute, providing advanced training to “at risk” individuals and organizations such as the U.S. Secret Service Special Operations Division, U.S. Intelligence Agencies, and U.S. Military Special Operations Special Mission Units. He is the author of “How to Keep from Being Robbed, Raped & Ripped Off (1984)," and “Staying Alive (1994),” and was the first North East Ohio martial artist to be featured on the cover of Black Belt Magazine's "Karate/Kung Fu Illustrated" (KKFI) where he wrote a regular column called "The Concrete Jungle." He continues to teach locally and nationally, attracting martial artists, stunt performers, and service professionals interested in a pragmatic approach to close quarter combat.

Hanshi, 10th Degree Black Belt

Soke, Director of MCMAA

Director of C.Q.C.S.I.

Josh began his martial arts training in 2003 under Hanshi Richard Fike, Sr., earning black belts in both Sanchi Ryu Karate and Mizu‑Te Combat Ju‑Jitsu. His dedication to disciplined practice carried naturally into his military career, where he served as a Mental Health Specialist, a Combat Engineer, and later a Drill Sergeant in the U.S. Army. During this time, he also earned instructor certification in the Modern Army Combatives Program. In 2011, Josh deployed to Afghanistan with Task Force Scorpion, where he advised, instructed, and coached Afghan National Security Forces. His performance in this role earned him commendations for meritorious service and combat action recognition. After returning home, he completed his degree in psychology and built a diverse professional background spanning mental health, education, security, and law enforcement.

Josh continued to expand his martial arts skill set through ongoing training in karate, judo, and jujitsu. In 2019, he fought victoriously in mixed martial arts. He has since taught civilian self‑defense courses as well as subject‑control and defensive‑tactics programs for security and law‑enforcement personnel through the Close Quarter Combat Skills Institute. In 2017, Josh reintroduced the Mizu‑Te Ju‑Jitsu program to the public and now serves as the system’s senior instructor. He remains a committed lifelong student of the martial arts and is passionate about sharing his knowledge, experience, and enthusiasm with every student he trains.
